Frequently Asked Questions:
What do we feed our puppies?
Purina Pro Plan Puppy, lamb & rice.
We feed our adult dogs Purina ONE True Instinct.
What vaccinations will my puppy have been given?
Our vet recommends puppy vaccinations be given at 6, 9, 12, and 15 weeks of age. Therefore, we will give the puppy his/her first shot (Vanguard 5--VANGUARD Plus 5 is for vaccination of healthy dogs 6 weeks of age or older as an aid in preventing canine distemper caused by canine distemper (CD) virus, infectious canine hepatitis (ICH) caused by canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1), respiratory disease caused by canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), canine parainfluenza caused by canine parainfluenza (CPiV) virus, and canine parvoviral enteritis caused by canine parvovirus (CPV) and CPV-2c.) at 6 weeks and assuming you pick it up at around 8 weeks, he/she will need another shortly after pick up. We begin giving oral doses of Pyrantel dewormer at 4-5 weeks of age. Due to their young age, this is the only kind we can give so it does not take care of all worms they are capable of getting.
Most likely we do a fecal sample at their 7 week check up to check for Coccidia. We will treat the puppy for that as well if needed.
Will my puppy be seen by the vet?
Yes, I take the puppies to the vet shortly before they are due to go to their new homes. The vet will look at their eyes, hips, knees, ears, and heart. If there are any concerns we will discuss that with the future owners. The vet will fill out a health certificate for the future owner showing that the puppy left our care with a clean bill of health.
Do we ship our puppies?
We can, but we have never shipped a puppy yet. I have flown with one as a carry-on though. My plane ticket and the $125 pet carry-on charge was paid by the puppy’s new owner.
Many people come to our place to pick up their puppy but we have met several people in St. Louis and Kansas City. We have even delivered puppies before. The farthest we have driven a puppy was Virginia! If meeting or delivery is something you would like to do, we would need to discuss the extra cost to do that. Meeting in KC or StL is an additional $250. Some people feel this is worth is to shave off time in their day and the gas they'd spend coming out here. I meet people within 30 minutes of our house for NO additional charge. That saves you an hour off your drive. This includes Springfield, Marshfield, or Mansfield.
When and how do we pick out our puppy?
The general rule for picking out your puppy is the order we receive the deposits. We usually start letting people choose at about 5-6 weeks of age. This allows the puppy time to fluff up and get to the color they will most likely be as well as develop a little personality. We allow visitors to schedule to come out and pick or if people are too far away, they go by the pictures or videos I send them. To keep the process moving efficiently, there isn’t much flexibility in scheduling visits.
What if I want pick of the litter?
$200 on top of the asking price will get you first pick of a male OR female from a specific litter. There is no “Pick of the Litter” as I need to keep my lists organized to let people know how many males and females I’ll have. That's the only way we know to keep it fair.
I don't think anyone wants last pick, but honestly, aside from one being lighter or darker, there is really not much difference in first and last pick. As puppies they are all the same size and all are happy and healthy. We've never had a "sickly" puppy that no one else wanted.
If we make a visit to pick out our puppy, is there anything we need to do?
We require visitors to wear plastic shoe coverings to prevent carrying any hazardous viruses or parasites into our puppy area. We provide these shoe covers and will hand them out before entering. Children are required to stay seated while handling the puppies and should never walk around with a puppy in hand. While I’ve never seen any child intentionally harm a puppy, they can quickly become very squirmy and hard to handle even for adults. If you’d like to purchase and bring a Snuggle Puppy, people swear by these in the transition to a new home. I will keep it here and rub it on the puppy’s mama right before he/she goes home so it has a familiar scent.
How does the DEPOSIT work?
When you put down a deposit on a puppy, no matter when that is, you should not expect it to be refunded unless something were to happen to the puppy while it is in our care. Early deposits are not required so if you are not sure you want to commit, either don’t put down a deposit, or don’t expect a refund when you change your mind. If circumstances come up and you are unable to get a puppy at the time you had planned, your deposit is transferable, meaning it is good for a future litter.
Early deposits are accepted and encouraged if you want a puppy from a specific time or litter. I contact people who have put down deposits first.
